Rate increases used to happen infrequently, and only after a long approval process. However, as of 2006 legislation was changed to allow the Postal Service to adjust the rate for inflation, once each year, with a minimum of 45 days notice. They plan to change the rates every year in May. The first class stamp rate, for one ounce or less, is increasing from 0.41 to 0.42, and other rates change as well.
